Amazing One Liner from a Freed Greek Slave (How to set goals)

The best book I’ve ever read is not a book.

It’s a collection of lectures from a freed slave called Epictetus. Today I will share with you one of my favorite quotes from his Discourses.

First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.

Why is this simple quote so powerful?

You Have to Have an Aim

If you don’t have an aim, you will be unmotivated and act in vain.

For example, If you want to become a writer that requires one set of training, habits, and skills. But If you want to become a banker that requires another set. In any case, you can’t know what to do until you have an aim.

Velocity is More Important than Speed

Hard work is important, but what’s more important is your direction.

It doesn’t matter if you run 100mph. If there’s a wall in front of you, you won’t make any progress. So, select an aim that aligns with your personality, make up, and situation.

Do You Even Know What You Want?

Lastly, notice Epictetus says “Say to yourself.”

I tried to become a Wall St. Banker. But I was doing it for all the wrong reasons, (status, money) and failed. If you are not careful, it’s easy to adopt your aim from society and the people around you.

Are Your Goals Really Your Own?

If yes, great. If no, or maybe, it helps to reflect.

What do you want?
