College Grads: Don’t Move Back in with Your Parents (if you can help it)

In some cultures, children live with their parents until marriage. But, that never felt like an option to me. Here’s why I am grateful for moving out at 18-years-old.

You Can Reinvent Yourself Away from Home

At home you are someone. People have certain expectations of you. While this comes with clear benefits, e.g., familiarity, love, comfort. It also comes with some drawbacks. You can get frozen in old ways and bad habits. If you want to reinvent yourself, the easiest way is to leave home.

You Need a Challenge to Grow

You will rise to the occasion in front of you. If things are easy, you will not grow. If you face challenges and set audacious goals, you will grow. Sometimes you will stumble but your failures will teach you. Willingly embrace challenges for a better life.

Improve your relationship with your parents

When someone fails to grow up, they often blame their parents. So by leaving home and becoming a (wo)man, you won’t grow to resent your parents. Secondly, your parents will be (hopefully) proud of your mission to become independent. When you do visit home, everyone can enjoy each other.
